Background of the study:
Entrepreneurship education has gained prominence as a means to equip secondary school students with critical skills such as creativity, problem-solving, and financial literacy. In Umuahia North, initiatives aimed at integrating entrepreneurship into the secondary school curriculum are designed to foster innovation and economic self-reliance (Okeke, 2023). By exposing students to entrepreneurial principles early, educators hope to stimulate a mindset geared toward business creation and job generation. However, challenges such as limited resources, inadequate teacher training, and insufficient practical exposure hinder the effectiveness of these programs (Chukwu, 2025)). Despite these obstacles, schools that have successfully implemented entrepreneurship modules report improved student engagement and a greater propensity for innovative thinking. This study examines the extent to which entrepreneurship education influences the attitudes and skills of secondary school students. It explores the effectiveness of current programs, identifies key challenges, and evaluates their impact on students’ readiness to participate in the competitive business environment. The findings will contribute to the development of more robust entrepreneurship curricula that can better prepare students for the dynamic global economy (Okeke, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Entrepreneurship education in Umuahia North faces significant implementation challenges, including inadequate funding, limited teacher expertise, and insufficient practical learning opportunities. These challenges undermine the potential of entrepreneurship programs to enhance student innovation and economic readiness. This study seeks to evaluate these obstacles and assess their impact on students’ entrepreneurial skills (Chukwu, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the current state of entrepreneurship education in secondary schools.
  2. To identify challenges that affect program effectiveness.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing entrepreneurship curricula.

Research questions:

  1. How effective is entrepreneurship education in developing student skills?
  2. What are the main challenges in implementing entrepreneurship programs?
  3. Which improvements can enhance the impact of entrepreneurship education?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Entrepreneurship education significantly enhances students’ creative and business skills.
  2. H₂: Inadequate resources hinder the effectiveness of entrepreneurship programs.
  3. H₃: Improved teacher training leads to better entrepreneurship outcomes.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it evaluates the impact of entrepreneurship education on secondary school students. Its findings will guide educators and policymakers in refining curricula to better prepare students for economic challenges and innovation (Okeke, 2023; Chukwu, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The research is limited to assessing the impact of entrepreneurship education on secondary school students in Umuahia North Local Government Area, Abia State, and does not extend to tertiary education or other regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Entrepreneurship Education: Curriculum initiatives aimed at teaching business creation and management skills.
  • Innovation: The process of generating and applying new ideas.
  • Economic Self-reliance: The ability to support oneself through entrepreneurial activities.
